aguilas

aguilas, mojacar, southern spainthe carnival city

Rarely is its sky veiled by clouds, instead its clear blue, unspoilt beauty forces you to close your eyes in order to stop the mirage from fading away. The sun, whose rays bounce off the castle cliffs forming a kaleidoscope of colours: purples, reds, greys, and greens, stretches itself out over the full length of the day. It is a friendly sun, almost fatherly, which heats the water for bathing and allows a cool breeze to pass by at just the right moment to refresh you. And the sea is a calm sea, old and weary of fighting.

The main charm of Aguilas, however, lies not in the "half moon" formed between the little eagle and the castle, not in its tranquil sea, nor in its warm climate. Without a doubt, that which captivates the visitor is the feeling that you are not a stranger, that everyone seems to consider you as an old acquaintance, that everywhere you go you are surrounded by friendliness, that wherever you are you sense a kindness and a tender hand looking after you.

The people of Aguilas are peace loving and hospitable and still retain, almost totally, the traditional virtues of southern Spain: overflowing humanity, generosity, cultivated friendliness, a dislike of doing anything in a hurry and a real appreciation of human values. Aguilas is an area full of contrasts. As you glance along the coast you can see, rising above the intense blue of the sea, rocky mountains and cliffs whose rugged presence stands out in contrast to the serenity of the sandy, white beaches and clear blue waters. If you can cast your eyes inland you come across a semi desert landscape in shades of ochre in whose barren soil you can find marine fossils and volcanic minerals; while just a few kilometres away to the north, you will be impressed by dark green woodlands where the paths are overhung with leafy pines and aromatic bushes.

All these characteristics offer an extensive range of possibilities for both the naturalist and avid sportsman alike as well as the average visitor who simply longs to get away from it all and lose himself on a solitary beach with only the seagulls for company. The choice is wide, from climbing to hiking across places of exceptional beauty, observing indigenous fauna on land or diving beneath warm waters to discover exuberant vegetation and amazing deep-sea creatures. There are a rich variety of water or land sports to choose from, all with adequate facilities. As for cultural life in Aguilas, this tends to revolve around a series of art exhibitions, conferences, craft demonstrations, theatre and musical events.
