An Historic and Artistic Centre
During the war for Granada, Boabdil sought refuge in velez Rubio for quite a long period of time. Apart from the capital of the Alhambra there were few places in his kingdom that held such outstanding beauty. From the Arabic fortress, still conserved, he would observe the flight of the eagles over the impressive sierra. He would go down to the market that, up to this day, fills the central streets of the village. History is present in every corner of Velez Rubio. In the baroque style of its churches, in the noble facades, ... The Regional museum can also be visited, but it's almost not necessary, the whole of the village is one large open air museum, in which one can wander through each and every era that this municipality of the region has experienced, now declared a Historic and Artistic Centre.
Velez Rubio also provides an excellent infrastructure in which to stay and try the rich gastronomy of the area.
